Happy Summer!

Please take this survey to give me an honest assessment of my teaching from this entire year:

-Story time: Petra's survival
-Your story: all of our lives have a shape; they take on a story based on even the smallest of our actions, words, and thoughts. What will the shape of your story be? Allow God to shape your story, not yourself.
-Please see today if you would like to meet about grades, assignments, end of the year, or anything, and we will set up a time this week.
-I will be reviewing all grades from the substitute time and will make all final grades fair and weighted.

Tues, 5/10

It's been a while since a new blog post has been posted. So here we are.

Today in class we will begin constructing a study guide for the impending final that is coming your way. TKAMB plays a significant role on the final, so it is best we review what we have learned. We will go over the characters in class and hopefully have an in depth understanding of their traits.

For each character on the board, come up with as many things about the character you can remember. Such as: traits, personality, looks, notable sayings, etc. Ask yourself if the character could represent something, like a scapegoat, mockingbird, protagonist, antagonist, etc.

You may organize this any way you like, the more detail, the better.

**Final Peer Review on Tues., May 17. Have at least 3 pages written with the Bibliography. Bring two printed copies to class for that day.

HW: Continue working on your research essays, Bedford Assignment, and independent reading.

Petra's Happy Hat Club: Installment #2

This is one from my younger days
When I had less tubes in my airways
So you can see my button-nose face
Under the button-hat, in its right place.

Love,

Mon, 5/02

Today

If ever there were a spring day so perfect,
so uplifted by a warm intermittent breeze

that it made you want to throw
open all the windows in the house

and unlatch the door to the canary's cage,
indeed, rip the little door from its jamb,

a day when the cool brick paths
and the garden bursting with peonies

seemed so etched in sunlight
that you felt like taking

a hammer to the glass paperweight
on the living room end table,

releasing the inhabitants
from their snow-covered cottage

so they could walk out,
holding hands and squinting

into this larger dome of blue and white,
well, today is just that kind of day.

-Billy Collins

This is our last journal entry. I thought I would have you all reflect on the year we have waded through, and I also want us to think about tomorrow. We are always waiting for something new to come our way, we are constantly improving ourselves to one day have what we want that gives us happiness. You could say we are waiting for "that year." Listen to this song by Train and figure out what he was waiting for in his "year."

Journal Entry #30
Describe in detail, what would your "year" look like? What would have to come together for you to make it “your year?”

Reflect on how his past year has been for you, what are some important things you have learned?

HW: Reading journals for TKAMB are due Mon, 5/9. In-class journals are due tomorrow, 5/3. Make sure you are all caught up.

Fri, 4/29

It's that day we've been talking about! Peer review day! My hope in this in-class activity, is for all of you to get a good start on forming your essays and to have a a solid map for the direction of your topics.

1. Peer Review-

Get into groups of three, each of you should grade the other two members of the group's work. Please be helpful when filling out the review sheet. Honest answers and appropriate critique can only help your classmates.

2. Poetry Fun-

I love poetry. I believe it is a beautiful form of expression. We have been reading and discussing TKAMB sufficiently in this class. You all have studied the characters, and have been inside their heads. Now, let's celebrate them. You will write two poems in class. The poems will be about a character of your choice from TKAMB. I have found some styles of poetry that I think you will enjoy writing. For your two poems, you will be given two choices each. Here's what I mean. Poem choice #1: Bull Durham Credo or Bio Poem.  #2: Haiku or Tanka Poem. Instructions and examples of these specific poems are posted on google classroom. Have fun and be creative!

3. Class Time-

If there is still time in class, you may get into groups and begin working on the Bedford assignment that is due on 5/20, the same time as the paper. Make the assignment a document you can type on and save.

HW: Finish reading TKAMB and keep researching your essay topic.
