Semester 1 Final Study Guide

English I: Introduction to Literature (with Mr. Kirkendall): 1st Semester Final, Dec. 2014
The final is 10% of your semester grade.

*You may use one 3x5 inch index card during the exam. Any notes you place on the card must be handwritten. No one else can make the card for you. The card may not be a photocopy.*

Part 1: Vocabulary  (20 questions, 40%)
o   Prefixes (a – dis)
o   Roots (acer – germ)

Part 2: Grammar (11 Questions, 22% of your final)
o   Bedford 19: Fragments
o   Bedford 20: Run-Ons
o   Bedford 8: Active and Passive Verbs
o   Bedford 11: Mixed Construction
o   Bedford 12: Misplaced Modifiers
o   Bedford 13: Distracting Shifts

Part 3: Les Miserables (8 Questions, 16% of your final)
o   Review all notes. Know these literary devices:
o   Foil
o   Contrast
o   Indirect/Direct Characterization
o   Theme
o   Plot (4 major types)
o   Be able to identify which characters say certain quotes.

Part 4: The Odyssey (4 Questions, 8% of your final)
o   Review all notes. Know the following themes:
o   Nous
o   Metis
o   Nostos
o   Feasting
o   Delayed Identification
o   Be able to identify when things happen, and who is involved—review major plot points.

Part 5: Mystery Analysis (5 questions, 10% of your final)
o   You will be asked to analyze a story you have not seen yet.
o   Review all notes on literary devices, analysis, and reading; especially:
o   Figurative language (simile, metaphor, etc…)
o   Plot (4 types)
o   Characterization (Direct and Indirect)

o   Theme
